He concludes that, "Freud's method is not capable of yielding objective data about mental processes". Macmillan also criticizes Hans Eysenck, a psychologist who argues in ''Decline and Fall of the Freudian Empire'' (1985) that Freud's patient Anna O. suffered from tuberculous meningitis. Macmillan believes that establishing any retrospective diagnosis with certainty is difficult.
